Abstract
Certification to a globally recognized standard is now a necessity in order to complete in the global market. In the food industry, certification to a scheme recognized by Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) is increasingly required by leading retailers and manufacturers in their supply chain.
Food safety crisis and continuing update in food safety legislation resulted to the publication of GFSI Benchmarking Requirements version 7.1 and for the current recognized scheme to incorporate the changes. The following changes were included for FSSC - transition year, nine additional requirements seven of which is applicable to the food industry, unannounced audit, and nonconformity rating and audit duration.
This study was conducted to determine the readiness and compliance of WHI's food safety management system against the requirements of FSSC 22000 version 4.1. Continued certification to FSSC 22000 standard provides assurance on the provision of safe products to consumer worldwide. The organization was due for recertification and underwent transition this 2018. To determine, readiness and compliance the organization underwent : gap analysis, internal audit, Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) review and external audit.
Gap analysis determined the need to establish and improve existing procedure related to the additional requirements and personnel underwent training to acquire necessary knowledge. HACCP review resulted to identifying changes that had impact on food safety management system and update in existing documentations. Internal audit identified lapses in documentation requirements and implementation of prerequisite programs. And lastly the organization underwent external audit for recertification and transition resulting to 14 minor nonconformities which identified lapses on documentation and implementation especially on the additional requirements, with this organization was recommended for continued certification to the standard which is valid for three years and an ongoing surveillance audit yearly will be done to ensure compliance to the management system.
Change is always a part of any management system. It is important that change is managed in an organization to ensure changes are sufficiently reviewed, approved, implemented and communicated across the organization. Creating a team that has the required skills and competencies to lead the change effort, training people, creating and communicating the vision across the organization are important for change to happen.
