Executive Summary
Over the past few years, the ubiquity of traditional telecommunications services has been generating huge revenues and profits for SMART Communications, Inc. This run-up, however, began faltering with the advent of new technological innovations and integration. In order for SMART to survive in this digital renaissance and maintain its competitiveness, it should consistently innovate building systems complementary to each other to solve customer problems and continuously create real profits. The main purpose of this report is to provide an assessment and evaluation of the current system of innovation of SMART Communications and determine whether its existing approach can help sustain its competitive advantage. In order to achieve such goal, the methodologies or analytical processes used to analyze and process the data collected are descriptive and evaluation research approaches. Results show that the innovation system of SMART is sufficient to help the company maintain its current leadership position and competitive advantage. However, it should be noted that the current practices of the company are applicable only to the existing state of the local telecommunications industry. In the event that the telecommunication industry changes, the company would need to revise its plans and strategies in order to remain successful. In addition to this, it is revealed that SMART has a sequential approach in the innovation process from Strategic Modeling to Monitoring. This approach may have set a concrete flow in terms of how to deal with ideas but there are some stages that need to be reexamined. Nevertheless, the company may also need to revisit some of its crucial elements in the innovation system such as methods in the Ideation stage as well as its innovation processes.
