Executive Summary

Regulatory standards are becoming more stringent in the light of scandals that have been recently happening in the Asia Pacific region. With the advancements of internet and social media, manufacturing errors, such as human errors, that had reached the consumer would mean high costs on recall and negative publicity on the brand's and the company's reputations as it poses food safety issues. The food and beverage (F&B) industry has large participation in the country's business landscape. Manufacturing sector takes the lions share in food exports. Despite the seemingly strong number of exports, Philippines remain to be a net importer of food and beverages, like most of the ASEAN countries. Machine vision is seen to solve common problems among manufacturing processes in the food manufacturing sector. Process innovation in the value chain by technology acquisition, i.e. machine vision technology, could correct manufacturing mistakes, strengthen competitive advantages in local market and increase the company's competence in the export markets. The impact of machine vision in the F&B industry was analyzed through the context of technology management using a combination which includes technology assessment, technology forecasting by analogy and technology transfer tools and methods. The analyses were able to show the impacts of machine vision technology on the economic, socio-technical and strategic aspects of the F&B industry.
