Abstract
Imagine one day, you wake up and feel feverish or having some discomfort. Instead of going to work, you decided to consult a doctor and seek for a medical attention. You then proceed to a medical provider such as a hospital or a private clinic. Once you are there, you start filling out patient forms regardless whether it's digital or paper-based.
Demographic information such as your name, age, sex, contact number and other Personal Identifiable Information (PII) including your past medical histories and laboratory results, all of these information will be recorded in an Electronic Health Record (EHR). These records will then be stored in database software within an ICT infrastructure manage, maintained and operated by the medical provider's internal IT team or an authorized third party technology vendor.
Unknowingly, you as a patient have given these third party entities your full trust that such information will be treated with utmost confidentiality and privacy. Technically, you also grant them the ability to alter and update private information however this type of activities is not allowed in such system of records without prior authorization.
This project report is about to untangle and attempt to address the possibility, of having a sovereign control of one's digital identity and information pertaining to his/her health and medical condition or state. The researcher will examine the concepts relating to digital identity, electronic health record (EHR) and Blockchain.
Hence, a systematic review of related literature (which was gathered through desk research) coupled with an interview with a subject matter expert in the field of health informatics have been undertaken to gather substantial information for this research. Next, an analysis on the existing digital identity strategies and its related technologies. Self-sovereign identity (SSID) and Blockchain will be presented and discussed in this project report.
And finally, towards the end of this project report the researcher will provide his/her critical analysis and insights through conclusions and recommendations.
