Abstract

Technology business incubators (TBI) spur the the growth of the startup ecosystem in the country. An estimated 300+ startups have been established to date and the list continues to grow with the Department of Science and Technology aiming to have about 1,000 startups by the year 2020. Critical in startup business growth is long-term sustainability. Business sustainability in the parlance of global environment also encompasses a firm's impact to the economy, environment and society. Technology startups, despite their infancy stage, have contributed to impacting sustainable development through technology and shared value creation. Incubators possess a major influence to startups in promoting sustainability in their business models.

The case studies discussed in this report had identified major practices of technology business incubators that impacts sustainability : (1) TBIs provide venues for startup founders to source out networks and funding that could be translated to profit; (2) TBIs could impact the environment with sustainable practices in its programs and facilities, as well as, coaching startups in creating business models that impact nature and society; and (3) TBIs elicit societal impacts to startup founders and to the market they seek to serve.

Albeit, gaps remain unfilled as the startup ecosystem focus more on business, productivity and financial technology applications. Social and green enterprises meanwhile mostly address energy, agriculture and the transportation markets, thereby retaining an undeserved portion of the water, climate, industrial and governance sectors, among others. These gaps play testament to barriers in the acceptance of sustainability practices among investors, founders and incubators. The combined culture and practices of the TBIs under study provides reason for consideration that sustainability management in TBIs positively influences startup ecosystem growth.
