Abstract
This paper documents a forecasting study of the possible digital strategy approaches of the University of the Philippines Technology Management Center (UP TMC). The intention of this work is to provide useful input to the UP TMC's strategic planning, given its central role in educating key members of our country's technology industries.
The UP TMC employs a classroom-based operation in learning, where students are expected to come onsite to be presented the course materials. Despite its effectiveness in educating its students, the logistical issues for the student and the faculty are evident. Both have to contend with transportation problems, work commitments, and the like.
In recent years a number of learning institutions abroad have employed digital technology. Some of these processes have challenged the concept of how learning institutions should operate, while some have redefined how a school interacts with students. However, none of them have yet to meet mainstream acceptance for various reasons.
This study aims to provide visions of the future where the UP TMC effectively uses digital technology to redefine the teacher-student relationship. This study employed the rigorous scenario building process, with an in-depth exploration of the environmental factors that will shape these visions.
The end-scenarios consist of an enrichment of the existing classroom dynamic, a movement of all teaching operations to the Internet, and a hybrid of the classroom-online model with assistance from industry. The paper concludes with the student's recommendation to focus the UP TMC's planning efforts on the salient points in each scenario.
