Abstract

"The future is a quantum!"

Quantum computing is born out of the need that despite the enormous amount of computing that Moore's law has been capable of, the over growing demand of speed and computing power nowadays are totally immeasurable. Manufacturers have long been working with Moore's law since computing was born-which according to Intel co-founder Gordon Moore in 1965, the number of transistors per square inch on integrated circuits double every year since their invention. And because of the doubling number of transistors per square inch at the current rate, we will soon reach an atomic scale which is not how transistors capable of operating. The need to deliver the enormous amount of computing capacity gives birth to quantum computing.

IBM studied quantum computing since 2012 and as of March 2017, one year ago, IBM announced that it has built the industry's first commercially available universal quantum computing system. And so IBM "Q" was born. IBM is very prudent in betting on the future by working in quantum computing. IBM has developed a small 16-qubit quantum computer and is out for the experiment enthusiasts to explore via the IBM Quantum experience project. IBM quantum computers are very promising and powerful machines that take a quantum leap on processing and delivering information. It was built by exploiting the principles of quantum mechanics, running new types of algorithms to process information in a holistic approach. This technology revolutionary breakthrough has been very amazing and promising when used in computing applications, artificial intelligence, optimization of complex systems, and even on new drug discovery.

This study will focus on unearthing what is quantum computing, its history, and how IBM has exploited the discovery and developed a new technology breakthrough in the form of IBM "Q". Moreover, a technology foresight on potential applications in the Philippines shall be developed out of the emerging quantum computing technology.
